Roma missed out on playing the final of Coppa Italia (the Italian cup) for the first time ever in five years. Arch rival Lazio instead seized the moment and played its first final in five years and what a success turned out to be. Lazio won the Italian cup after a thrilling penalty shoot-out against Sampdoria.
Mauro Zarate scored 1-0 for Lazio but Sampdorias Giampaolo Pazzinis later on equalized and after extra time the final score was 1-1. A penalty shoot-out had to decide the winner of Coppa Italia 2008-2009.
After five penalties each the score was still at draw but when Ousmane Dabo scored 7-6 for Lazio he put the pressure on Sampdoria. When Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved Hugo Campagnaros penalty the victory was a fact.
