Giggs signs new deal, Scholes to follow

Ryan Giggs has won more medals than any other player in British football history, has made over 800 appearances in a career spanning 18 years and he’s STILL enjoying his football. More importantly, he’s hit the sort of consistent form (albeit playing once a week as he closes in on his forties) that merits a contract extension.

Ferguson trusts him to be doing the job for United next season as well, and has extended Giggs’ contract till June 2011.

Sir Alex Ferguson:

“Ryan deserves a new contract and I am sure that he will play for another two years. His form is fantastic at the moment and he is playing some of his best football.”

Indeed, and even though some doubters will use this as an excuse to criticise United for not strengthening the squad and failing to spend transfer funds, as long as Giggs and Scholes (who’s also going to be offered a contract extension) keep doing a job for United at the performance levels expected of players at Old Trafford, it shouldn’t matter if they are 36 or 22.

Ryan Giggs:

“I am delighted that I have agreed one more year. I am enjoying my football more than ever and I am looking forward to hopefully winning more trophies with Manchester United.”

Good on Giggs, and hopefully the club can use his and Scholes’ time at the club to groom the stars of tomorrow.
